Peace with Honour --
Motto.

prinrose

Occasionally the motto 'Peace with Honour' will be found on Primrose League items in place of the normal 'Imperium et Libertas'. This relates to the speech given in 1878 by Benjamin Disraeli where he states:- Lord Salisbury and myself have brought you back peace - but a peace I hope with honour.

During the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78) Disraeli supported Turkey diplomatically and by threat of intervention in order to combat Russian influence in the eastern Mediterranean. He forced Russia to submit the Treaty of San Stefano to the Congress of Berlin (1878) and there secured the treaty revisions that greatly reduced Russian power in the Balkans and helped preserve peace in Europe.

A Stevengraph matted portrait including the Motto and a wreath of Primroses.

Stevengraph matted pictures and portraits were first shown to the general public at the York Exhibition on 7th. May 1879.
