Primrose
Mowbray Coat-of-Arms

I am indebted to Christopher and Christina Glennie for the transfer of their family related Primrose League items to my care.
This page contains illustrations of all these items, plus a brief history of the Mowbrays', their former owners.

In order to avoid confusion regarding the Cornish connection, the following should be noted:-
The College of Arms reports that in 1847 a pedigree was entered into their records showing that John Robert Cornish changed his name, by Royal Licence, to Mowbray on marrying a Miss Mowbray, her father's heiress. He also quartered the Arms of Cornish and Mowbray, again by Royal Licence.

The following Primrose League Badges/Bars were issued during the period 1885 - 1922 and were for use by either males or females, or both. To sort out who used what is an almost impossible task and one that will not be attempted. As the Dame President badge would appear to have been issued post 1920 (this dating from the makers mark on the suspension bar) it's most likely recipient was Diana Margaret, wife of the 5th Baron.

The following two photographs show a ceremonial wall hanging or table covering bearing the monogram of Sir Robert Gray Cornish Mowbray. The Primrose League connection is obvious and the two Heraldic Arms depicted form part of the Mowbray Coat-of-Arms. See the Mowbray entry from the 1949 issue of 'Burkes Peerage, Baronage & Knightage', as it illustrates the family Coat-of-Arms.

A first edition of a book titled 'Biographical List of the Members of the Club of Nobody's Friends' by G. E. Cockayne, which contains a List of the Members since its Foundation on 21st June 1800 to 30 September 1885 has just been noted. This scarce book, printed for Private Circulation (London 1885), has an index and 254 pages, it contains a fine bookplate on the front endpaper of one of the members, the Right Hon. Sir John Robert Cornish Mowbray.
Most of the members were connected to the church. This organisation is still active today, in fact our Prime Minister (Tony Blair) applied to join (successful?).
