PRESS RELEASE |
Date: 19th April, 2006 Release time: Immediate Released by: Nicky Morgan |
Nicky Morgan speaks at Sileby Primrose League meeting. |
Nicky Morgan, Loughborough's Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman was the guest speaker at a tea organised by the Sileby Primrose League earlier today. Nicky spoke about her recent trip to Washington DC and her visits to a number of well-known sights and monuments there. She highlighted the pride which all Americans have in their country and their fight over the years to protect their freedoms and called for all Britons to be proud of their country too and to fight to protect our fundamental freedoms. She said, "We should be angry about the way in which this current Government is dismantling our fundamental rights and constitutional checks and balances. They have half-reformed the House of Lords, they stand accused of selling honours, they want to pass laws so they can by-pass Parliamentary scrutiny of future legislation when it suits them and they have tried to end jury trials, whilst seeking to hold some people indefinitely without trial and now, today, it appears they want to change the criminal justice system so that we would be presumed guilty and have to prove our innocence. The Conservative Party must fight against these infringements of our rights and we must show how our fundamental values of trusting people, sharing responsibility and ensuring people are empowered to make the most of their lives are the right values for this country." ENDS. Editor's Notes: The Primrose League was formed in 1883 by Disraeli to promote women's rights and to encourage active participation in the Conservative Party by women. Although the national organisation was amalgamated with the national Conservative Party by the mid 20th century the Sileby branch has been active for many years and the local chairman is Mrs C Machin.
